Paul Daniel
Conductor
In 2009, Paul Daniel takes up a position as principal conductor and artistic adviser of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in Perth. He has appeared as guest conductor with major orchestras and opera houses and has had a number of fixed engagements. From 1997 to 2005 he was musical director of English National Opera. Prior to that, from 1990 to 1997 he was music director of Opera North and principal conductor at English Northern Philharmonia; and from 1987 to 1990 he was music director of Opera Factory. He has a had guest engagements at the Royal Opera House, La Monnaie in Brussels, the Bavarian State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. His orchestral engagements have been with the Philharmonia, the London Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (with which he recorded Elijah for Decca), the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music, the Orchestre de Paris, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Among Paul Daniel's numerous recordings, a CD of Elgar's 3rd Symphony on Naxos has been especially successful. Forthcoming opera projects include Macbeth at La Monnaie in Brussels, Così fan tutte in Munich, Peter Grimes in Dresden, and King Roger for the Teatro Real in Madrid. In addition to his orchestral concerts with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra he will be appearing at the 2009 Edinburgh Festival and conducting the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, the Milwaukee Symphony and the Real Filharmonia de Galicia. In February 1998 Paul Daniel won an Olivier Award. For his services to opera he has been made Commander of the British Empire.
