Rosalind Plowright

Rosalind Plowright is known for her great musicality, versatility as an actress, and powerful stage presence. In the 1980s she sang most of the soprano roles in Italian opera, and now she has dedicated herself to the dramatic mezzo-soprano repertoire, in which she is equally successful. Rosalind Plowright has sung with the Three Tenors, among other illustrious colleagues. She gave her American debut alongside José Carreras; together they also sang André Chénier at the Royal Opera House and collaborated on a CD recording of La forza del destino, which won a Gramophone Award. At the Royal Opera House Covent Garden she sang with Plácido Domingo in ll trovatore and she won the Prix Fondation Fanny Heldy for a recording of the opera. She performed alongside Luciano Pavarotti at the Royal Opera House (in Aida) and at a gala concert in the Arena di Verona. Her discography includes the operas Maria Stuarda, Otello, Aida, and Hänsel and Gretel (winner of a Grammy for best recording) and Mendelssohn's Elijah for the UK label Chandos. Further recordings include La Vestale for Orfeo, Les contes d’Hoffmann for EMI and Mahler's 2nd Symphony for Deutsche Grammophon. In years to come Rosalind Plowright will perform in Stuttgart, Bregenz, Madrid, Paris as well as at the Royal Opera House. In 2007, the singer was awarded an OBE (British order of merit).
